About H.R. McMaster
Herbert Raymond McMaster, born on July 24, 1962, in Philadelphia, is a retired United States Army lieutenant general who served as the 25th United States National Security Advisor from 2017 to 2018. His military career includes participation in key conflicts such as the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. McMaster graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1984 and earned a Ph.D. in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996. His doctoral dissertation was critical of American strategy and military leadership during the Vietnam War and served as the basis for his book Dereliction of Duty, which became a bestseller and is widely read within the U.S. military. During the Gulf War, he commanded Eagle Troop, 2nd Cavalry Regiment in the Battle of 73 Easting. McMaster's military service also includes teaching military history at West Point, commanding various units such as the 1st Squadron 4th Cavalry in Germany, and advising on counterinsurgency efforts in Iraq. He held leadership roles at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command and served as Commander of Task Force Shafafiyat in Afghanistan. In 2017, he succeeded Michael Flynn as National Security Advisor, while remaining on active duty; he retired from the military in 2018. Since then, McMaster has been affiliated with the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow. His academic and policy work includes roles at the Freeman Spogli Institute, Stanford Graduate School of Business, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and Arizona State University. He is also the host of Battlegrounds With H.R. McMaster, a platform discussing international security issues.
