About H.R. McMaster
Herbert Raymond McMaster is a retired United States Army lieutenant general and a scholar affiliated with the Hoover Institution. He served as the 25th United States National Security Advisor from 2017 to 2018. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1984 and earned a Ph.D. in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996. His dissertation, which was critical of American strategy and military leadership during the Vietnam War, served as the foundation for his book Dereliction of Duty. McMaster participated in military operations including the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the Gulf War, he commanded Eagle Troop, 2nd Cavalry Regiment in the Battle of 73 Easting. His career has included teaching military history at the United States Military Academy, commanding a cavalry squadron in Germany, and serving as a top counterinsurgency advisor to General David Petraeus in Baghdad. He has held leadership roles at the U.S. Army War College, Fort Benning, and the Army Capabilities Integration Center. McMaster was appointed National Security Advisor in February 2017, while remaining on active duty, and served until his resignation in March 2018. Since then, he has taken on academic and policy roles, including senior fellowships at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He is also the host of Battlegrounds With H.R. McMaster, a platform exploring international security issues.
