About Jimmy Carter

James Earl Carter Jr. was an American politician and humanitarian who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. A member of the Democratic Party, he also served as the 76th governor of Georgia and in the Georgia State Senate. Born in Plains, Georgia, Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and initially joined the submarine service before returning to his family's peanut farm. He was active in the civil rights movement and became one of the first of the 'New South governors' committed to desegregation. Carter announced his candidacy for president in 1976 and secured the Democratic nomination as a relatively unknown candidate outside his home state, ultimately narrowly defeating incumbent President Gerald Ford in the general election. His presidency was marked by significant foreign policy achievements, including the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and establishing diplomatic relations with China. He also created a national energy policy and signed bills that established the Departments of Energy and Education. However, his time in office was also characterized by foreign crises such as the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Iranian Revolution, which led to the Iran hostage crisis and an oil crisis. Carter sought re-election in 1980 but was defeated by Ronald Reagan. Following his presidency, which is often ranked below average by historians, Carter engaged in extensive humanitarian work. He established the Carter Center to promote human rights and conducted peace negotiations, election monitoring, and disease eradication efforts worldwide. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
