About Jane Goodall
Dame Valerie Jane Morris Goodall was an English primatologist and anthropologist renowned for her pioneering work in primate ethology. She is widely regarded as the world's preeminent chimpanzee expert due to her extensive field research on the social and family behaviors of wild chimpanzees in the Kasakela community at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. Beginning in 1960, her research demonstrated that chimpanzees share many traits with humans, including tool use, complex emotions, social bonds, organized warfare, and the passing of knowledge across generations. Her work challenged traditional views of human uniqueness and significantly advanced understanding of primate behavior. Goodall was awarded a PhD in ethology from the University of Cambridge in 1965. She authored numerous publications on her research, including her first book, In the Shadow of Man, published in 1971, which has been translated into 48 languages. In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute to promote wildlife conservation and established the Roots & Shoots youth program in 1991, which evolved into a global network. Her conservation efforts included establishing wildlife sanctuaries and reforestation projects across Africa and campaigning for the ethical treatment of animals. Goodall served as a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2002 and contributed her expertise to organizations such as Save the Chimps. Over her career, she authored 32 books and appeared in over 40 films. She received numerous honors, including the Hubbard Medal, Kyoto Prize, Templeton Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was named a dame commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 and remained active in advocacy and board service until her death in 2025.
