Dennis Lee Hopper (May 17, 1936 – May 29, 2010) was an American actor, filmmaker, photographer, and visual artist recognized as a significant figure of the New Hollywood era. He studied acting at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego and the Actors Studio in New York. Hopper made his first television appearance in 1954 and quickly appeared in influential films such as Rebel Without a Cause and Giant. Throughout his career, he played supporting roles in notable films including Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Sons of Katie Elder, Cool Hand Luke, Hang Em High, and True Grit. His directorial debut came with the film Easy Rider in 1969, which he co-wrote with Peter Fonda and Terry Southern. The film earned him the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Debut and an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In addition to his acting and directing work, Hopper was an accomplished photographer, beginning in the 1960s, with his work receiving critical recognition. He was often cast as external and rebellious characters in films such as Mad Dog Morgan, The American Friend, Apocalypse Now, Rumble Fish, and Blue Velvet, and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Hoosiers. His later work included roles in True Romance, Speed, Waterworld, and Elegy. Posthumously, he appeared in The Other Side of the Wind. Hopper’s oeuvre also encompassed other directorial projects including The Last Movie and Colors, and his television roles ranged from series appearances to award-nominated performances.
