Dame Denise Rosemarie Lewis, born on August 27, 1972, is a former British athletics athlete and sports administrator renowned for her achievements in the heptathlon. She secured the gold medal in the event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and is recognized as the first European to win Olympic gold in the heptathlon. Additionally, Lewis is a two-time Commonwealth Games champion and the 1998 European Champion. She also earned silver medals at the World Championships in 1997 and 1999. Her personal best score for the heptathlon is 6,831 points, achieved at the Décastar meeting in 2000, which was a British record at the time and places her third on the all-time British list behind Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Jessica Ennis-Hill. Lewis is regarded as one of Britain's greatest female multi-eventers, alongside other distinguished athletes such as Mary Rand and Mary Peters. Since retiring from competition, she has worked extensively in television and media, serving as a regular athletics pundit for BBC Television during several Olympic Games including London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024. She stepped down from her role at the BBC following the conclusion of the athletics coverage at the 2024 Games. Beyond her media involvement, Lewis holds leadership positions as president of Commonwealth Games England and, since 2023, as president of UK Athletics, the governing body for the sport of athletics in the United Kingdom.
