William December Williams Jr., known as Billy Dee Williams, is an American actor, novelist, and painter. Over his six-decade career, he has appeared in more than 100 films and television roles. He is particularly renowned for his portrayal of Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise, a role that made him the first black actor with a major part in the series. Williams's filmography also includes notable titles such as Mahogany, Scott Joplin, Nighthawks, Batman, Lady Sings the Blues, and The Lego Batman Movie. His career began with his film debut in The Last Angry Man in 1959, but he gained wider recognition in the television movie Brian's Song in 1971, which earned him an Emmy nomination for Best Actor. In addition to his work in film, Williams has been active in television since 1966, with credits spanning over 70 appearances. His recurring roles have included parts in Gideon's Crossing, Dynasty, General Hospital: Night Shift, and General Hospital, alongside appearances on shows like The Jeffersons, 227, and The Hughleys. Beyond acting, Williams is also an accomplished painter, having received a scholarship to the National Academy of Fine Arts and Design, where he won a Hallgarten Prize. His artwork has been exhibited worldwide.
