Rob Reiner was an American filmmaker, actor, and political activist born in New York City. He initially gained recognition as an actor, notably portraying Michael Meathead Stivic in the television sitcom All in the Family from 1971 to 1979. This role earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Transitioning to filmmaking, Reiner directed a diverse array of critically acclaimed films spanning comedy, drama, romance, and documentary genres. His directorial works include the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, the coming-of-age film Stand by Me, the fantasy romance The Princess Bride, the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, the psychological thriller Misery, and the legal drama A Few Good Men, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. He also directed The American President and the romantic drama The Sure Thing. Reiner's acting credits in films include Sleepless in Seattle, Bullets Over Broadway, The First Wives Club, Primary Colors, EDtv, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Alongside his directing and acting career, Reiner co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment in 1987. Beyond his film work, Reiner was a committed political activist advocating for LGBTQ rights, early childhood education, and environmental causes. He supported Democratic candidates and co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which challenged California's same-sex marriage ban. Reiner received numerous accolades, including two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Hugo Award, and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His films have been inducted into the National Film Registry. Reiner passed away on December 14, 2025, and his remains and those of his wife were found murdered at their Los Angeles home, with their son charged in connection with the case.
