William Boyd Allison Davis (October 14, 1902 – November 21, 1983) was a distinguished American educator, anthropologist, writer, researcher, and scholar. He joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1942, becoming the third African American to hold a full faculty position at a major white university. During his tenure, he mentored students such as anthropologists St. Clair Drake and sociologist Nathan Hare. Davis is renowned for his pioneering research in anthropology during the 1930s, focusing on southern race, caste, and class, as well as his investigations into intelligence quotient tests in the 1940s and 1950s. His work also contributed to the development of compensatory education, influencing the conceptual foundations of the federal Head Start Program. Davis's legacy has been recognized through various honors, including a commemorative postage stamp issued by the United States Postal Service. His academic career and research significantly advanced understanding of social and racial issues, and he is remembered as one of the most promising black scholars of his generation.
