Allen began his career as a comedy writer for Sid Caesar specials and contributed humor pieces to The New Yorker. He wrote Broadway plays, including Don't Drink the Water and Play It Again Sam, before developing a stand-up comedy persona characterized as an insecure, intellectual, fretful nebbish. He published several humor books and albums, earning a Grammy nomination. His acclaimed film Annie Hall won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Allen has directed many films set in New York City, with works such as Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Crimes and Misdemeanors. He maintains an active production schedule, creating films, series, and publishing memoirs and novels. His personal life has been widely publicized, particularly his relationship with Mia Farrow and subsequent controversy involving allegations made by Farrow, which Allen has denied.
