William Conrad: podcast appearances and interviews

William Conrad, born John William Cann Jr., on September 27, 1920, was an American actor, producer, and director whose career spanned five decades in radio, film, and television. He served as a fighter pilot during World War II before moving to Hollywood, where he initially worked as a radio writer and actor. Conrad played a variety of character roles in films, beginning with his appearance in the noir film The Killers in 1946. Notably, he originated the role of Marshal Matt Dillon in the radio series Gunsmoke, which aired from 1952 to 1961. In addition to his acting, he narrated several television programs including Rocky and Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, The Fugitive, and Hoppity Hooper, from 1959 to 1967.

As his on-screen opportunities diminished in the 1950s, Conrad transitioned into roles behind the camera, working as a producer and director in television, narration, and Warner Bros. films during the 1960s. He gained stardom through his portrayal of detectives in television series such as Cannon from 1971 to 1976 and Nero Wolfe in 1981. Later in his career, he played district attorney Jason Lochinvar J. L. Fatman McCabe in the legal drama Jake and the Fatman, which aired from 1987 to 1992.
