Wesley Earl Craven was an American filmmaker renowned for his work in the horror genre. He was the creator of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, which he both wrote and directed the original film, and he also co-wrote and produced the third installment. Craven directed the first four films in the Scream franchise and was responsible for other notable movies such as The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, The People Under the Stairs, and Red Eye. His filmography also includes Swamp Thing, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Shocker, Vampire in Brooklyn, and Music of the Heart. Craven was recognized as one of the masters of horror, receiving several awards including a Scream Award, a Sitges Film Festival Award, and a Fangoria Chainsaw Award. He was also honored by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films with the Life Career Award in 1995 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York City Horror Film Festival in 2012. Throughout his career, Craven mixed horror clichés with humor, contributing significantly to the genre and achieving a lasting legacy. He passed away at the age of 76 due to a brain tumor at his home in Los Angeles.
