John Howard Carpenter, born on January 16, 1948, is an American filmmaker, composer, and actor known for his work primarily within the horror, action, and science fiction genres of the 1970s and 1980s. He has received recognition for his influence on cinema, including the Golden Coach Award from the French Directors' Guild at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, which honored him as a creative genius. In addition, Carpenter was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 3, 2025. His early films, such as Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980), Escape from New York (1981), and Starman (1984), achieved critical and commercial success. Many of his other films from the same period, including Dark Star (1974), Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), The Thing (1982), and Big Trouble in Little China (1986), have been regarded as cult classics. Carpenter is often involved in the musical composition of his films; he has won a Saturn Award for Best Music for Vampires (1998) and has released five studio albums, including Lost Themes (2015) and Lost Themes IV: Noir (2024).
