About Virginia Hall

Virginia Hall Goillot was an American who worked with the United Kingdom's clandestine Special Operations Executive and the American Office of Strategic Services in France during World War II. She was the first female SOE agent to operate in France, arriving in Vichy France in August 1941. Throughout her service, she created the Heckler network in Lyon and became an expert at organizing resistance activities, supplying agents with weapons and money, assisting in escapes, and providing safe houses and medical aid to wounded agents and pilots. After fleeing France in November 1942 to avoid German capture, Hall returned in March 1944 as a wireless operator for the OSS in the Saint network. Working largely alone in occupied territory, she supplied arms, training, and directions to French resistance groups, notably supporting the Maquisards and helping to clear German forces from Haute-Loire prior to the arrival of American troops. Recognized by the Germans as Artemis and nicknamed the Limping Lady, Hall was considered by the Gestapo to be the most dangerous Allied spy. Despite losing part of her left leg in a hunting accident and using a prosthesis she named Cuthbert, she carried out her covert operations with resilience and resourcefulness. After the war, she continued her work with the CIA's Special Activities Division. Hall’s efforts contributed significantly to Allied success in France, and her legacy as a pioneering and fearless espionage agent endures.
