Elizabeth Blackwell: podcast appearances and interviews

Elizabeth Blackwell (1821–1910) was an English-American physician recognized as the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States and the first woman on the Medical Register of the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom. Her career was marked by her role as a social reformer and a pioneer in advancing education for women in medicine. Initially working as a schoolteacher to support her family, Blackwell’s interest in medicine emerged after a friend's illness led her to consider the importance of female doctors. Facing widespread prejudice, she was rejected from most medical schools, except Geneva Medical College in New York, where she gained acceptance through an unconventional vote by male students, initially as a joke. Blackwell became the first female student at an American medical school in 1847. She graduated in 1849, publishing the first medical article by a female student in the United States, which emphasized empathy and social justice. In 1857, she co-founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children with her sister Emily Blackwell and later contributed to medical education for women, establishing clinical programs and advocating for women’s participation in medicine. Her influence extended internationally, as she helped establish the London School of Medicine for Women in 1874 after returning to England. Blackwell's legacy includes her pioneering contributions to medicine and her efforts to promote education and opportunities for women in the field.
