Vera Ann Farmiga is an American actress and singer born on August 6, 1973. She began her professional acting career on stage with her performance in the original Broadway production of Taking Sides in 1996. Her transition to television and film led to her breakthrough role as a drug addict in the drama Down to the Bone in 2004. She subsequently appeared in several notable films including The Manchurian Candidate in 2004, The Departed in 2006, and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas in 2008. Farmiga also gained recognition as a scream queen for her roles in horror films Joshua in 2007 and Orphan in 2009. Her performance in the comedy-drama Up in the Air in 2009 earned her an Academy Award nomination, among other accolades.
