John Joseph Nicholson, born on April 22, 1937, is an American retired actor and filmmaker. Considered one of the greatest actors of the 20th century, Nicholson is known for portraying charismatic rebels challenging social norms. Over his career spanning more than five decades, he received numerous awards, including three Academy Awards, three British Academy Film Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award. Nicholson won Oscars for Best Actor for his roles in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and As Good as It Gets, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Terms of Endearment. His performances have earned him multiple nominations for films such as Easy Rider, Chinatown, and The Departed. He made his film debut in 1958 with The Cry Baby Killer and appeared in notable films including Psych-Out, Carnal Knowledge, The Shining, Batman, and The Bucket List. In addition to acting, Nicholson directed three films and wrote several screenplays, including the Monkees' film Head. He retired from acting following his appearance in How Do You Know in 2010. Nicholson is one of only four male actors to win three Academy Awards and is distinguished as one of the most nominated male actors in Oscar history with twelve nominations. He has received numerous honors, including the AFI Life Achievement Award, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and the Kennedy Center Honor.
