About Martin Sheen
Martin Sheen, born Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez on August 3, 1940, is an American actor with a career spanning more than six decades. His work in television and film has earned him numerous awards, including three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and four Actor Awards. In 1989, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2025, was ranked by The Independent as the greatest actor never to have been nominated for an Academy Award. Sheen's early recognition came with a Tony Award nomination for his performance in The Subject Was Roses in 1964. He also starred in the film adaptation of the play, which garnered a Golden Globe Award nomination. His notable films include Badlands, Apocalypse Now, Gandhi, Wall Street, Catch Me If You Can, The Departed, The Way, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Judas and the Black Messiah. In television, Sheen received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Murphy Brown and gained widespread acclaim for portraying President Josiah Jed Bartlet in The West Wing, a role that earned him six Emmy nominations. Other TV roles include portrayals of historical figures such as Robert F. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, and Robert Hanson, as well as appearances in series like Grace and Frankie. Born to a Spanish father and an Irish mother, he adopted the stage name Martin Sheen to facilitate his acting career. He is the father of four children, all actors, and has directed one film, Cadence, in which he appeared alongside his sons Charlie and Ramón.
