Tony Alexander Adams, born on 10 October 1966, is an English former football player and manager known for his long-standing career at Arsenal and for captaining the England national team. Adams played as a centre-back for Arsenal for 19 years, making a total of 672 appearances. During his time with the club, he achieved significant success, winning four English league titles, three FA Cups, two Football League Cups, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and two FA Community Shields. He holds the distinction of being one of the few players to captain a title-winning team in three different decades. Adams's contributions to Arsenal have been widely recognized, including his inclusion in the Football League 100 Legends and his statue outside the Emirates Stadium. Internationally, he earned 66 caps for England between 1987 and 2000 and participated in four major tournaments. After retiring from playing, Adams transitioned into football management, leading teams such as Wycombe Wanderers, Portsmouth, Azerbaijani side Gabala, and Spanish club Granada. Off the field, Adams faced personal struggles with alcoholism from early in his career. He was sentenced to four months in prison for driving while intoxicated after a car crash. From 1996 onward, he achieved complete recovery and became involved in supporting sportspeople battling addictions by founding the Sporting Chance Clinic, which provides assistance for those with drink, drug, or gambling issues.
