Thomas Fahr Steyer is an American businessman, philanthropist, environmental advocate, and Democratic political activist. He founded Farallon Capital, a hedge fund based in San Francisco, in 1986 and served as its co-senior managing partner until 2012. Following his departure from the firm, Steyer focused on climate advocacy and Democratic politics. He is the founder of NextGen America and a co-founder of Galvanize Climate Solutions, an investment firm dedicated to addressing climate change. Steyer is a billionaire with an estimated net worth of 2.4 billion dollars as of 2026. Alongside his wife, Kat Taylor, he has supported various philanthropic and social-enterprise initiatives, including Beneficial State Bank and TomKat Ranch. In the political sphere, Steyer became a prominent Democratic donor during the 2010s, financing environmental ballot initiatives, candidate campaigns, and the movement to impeach Donald Trump. He authored the book Cheaper, Faster, Better: How We’ll Win the Climate War, which appeared on the New York Times bestseller list in 2024. Steyer ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, spending over 253 million dollars on his campaign before ending his bid in February of that year with no pledged delegates. In 2025, he announced a campaign for governor of California and spent more than 215 million dollars on the race. He finished in third place in California's nonpartisan primary on June 2, 2026, and did not advance to the general election.
