Tim Kaine is an American politician and lawyer serving as the junior United States senator from Virginia since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously held the positions of governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010 and lieutenant governor from 2002 to 2006. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and raised in Overland Park, Kansas, Kaine graduated from the University of Missouri and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. He entered private practice and also served as a lecturer at the University of Richmond School of Law. Kaine's political career began with his election to the Richmond city council in 1994, followed by his tenure as mayor of Richmond from 1998 until his election as lieutenant governor. As governor, he was elected in 2005 and served from 2006 to 2010. Kaine also chaired the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, he was elected to the United States Senate, where he defeated former governor and senator George Allen. He was reelected in 2018 with a wide margin, and secured a third term in 2024. Kaine was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in the 2016 presidential election, running alongside Hillary Clinton. Although Clinton and Kaine won the popular vote, they lost the electoral college vote to the Republican ticket of Donald Trump and Mike Pence.
