Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, born on June 8, 1955, is an English computer scientist renowned for inventing the World Wide Web, HTML, the URL system, and HTTP. His proposal for an information management system on March 12, 1989, led to the development of the Web. In mid-November of that year, he successfully implemented the first communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol client and server via the Internet. Berners-Lee also devised and built the first Web browser and Web server, contributing significantly to the Web's evolution. He is a professorial research fellow at the University of Oxford and holds the title of professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As the founder and emeritus director of the World Wide Web Consortium, he oversees ongoing Web development efforts. He co-founded the World Wide Web Foundation with Rosemary Leith and is involved in various initiatives, including the Open Data Institute, of which he is president. Berners-Lee's contributions have been recognized through numerous accolades, including being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004 and receiving the 2016 Turing Award for his pioneering work. His roles also include being a senior researcher at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, a member of the advisory board of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, and a director of the Web Science Research Initiative. Additionally, he was elected a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences in 2009 and has served on the board of trustees for the Ford Foundation.
