Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, born on June 8, 1955, is an English computer scientist recognized as the inventor of the World Wide Web. He is credited with developing key web technologies including HTML, the URL system, and HTTP. Berners-Lee proposed an information management system on March 12, 1989, and successfully implemented the first communication between an HTTP client and server via the Internet in mid-November of the same year. He also devised and implemented the first Web browser and Web server, contributing significantly to the web’s early development. He is a professorial research fellow at the University of Oxford and a professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Berners-Lee is the founder and emeritus director of the World Wide Web Consortium, which oversees the ongoing development of the Web. He also co-founded the World Wide Web Foundation with Rosemary Leith and serves as a founder and president of the Open Data Institute. His professional roles include past positions at MIT’s CSAIL, where he held the 3Com founder's chair, and memberships on various advisory boards including the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence and the Web Science Research Initiative. He was knighted in 2004 by Queen Elizabeth II and was awarded the 2016 Turing Award for his pioneering work. Berners-Lee has been recognized as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century by Time magazine and has received numerous accolades for his contributions to technology.
