Slavoj Žižek is a Slovenian philosopher, cultural theorist, and public intellectual, born on 21 March 1949. He has held numerous academic positions, including being a Global Distinguished Professor of German at New York University and a professor of philosophy and psychoanalysis at the European Graduate School. Additionally, he is a senior researcher at the Institute for Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana. From 2004 until September 2025, Žižek served as the international director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities at the University of London. His work focuses on continental philosophy, particularly Hegelianism, psychoanalysis, and Marxism, alongside political theory, film criticism, and theology. He is affiliated with the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis, a group of Slovenian scholars working on German idealism, Lacanian psychoanalysis, ideology critique, and media analysis. Žižek's first book in English, The Sublime Object of Ideology, published in 1989, helped introduce the Ljubljana School's thought to an English-speaking audience. An accomplished author, he has written over 50 books in multiple languages and is fluent in Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, English, German, and French. Known for his distinctive public style, Žižek's appearances and writings often include obscene jokes, pop cultural references, and provocative political commentary, which have garnered both fame and criticism within and outside academic circles.
