Scott M. Stringer, born on April 29, 1960, is an American politician who has served in various governmental roles in New York City. He was the 44th New York City Comptroller, beginning his term on January 1, 2014. As a member of the Democratic Party, Stringer has also held positions as a New York State Assemblyman and as the 26th borough president of Manhattan. His career in public service began in 1983 when he became a legislative assistant to New York State Assemblyman and future United States Congressman Jerry Nadler. In 1992, he successfully ran for a seat in the New York State Assembly vacated by Nadler, representing the Upper West Side. He served as a State Assemblyman for six terms, spanning 13 years until 2005. That year, he was elected borough president of Manhattan. Stringer sought election as mayor of New York City in the Democratic primaries of 2021 and 2025 but was unsuccessful in those campaigns. His career has been marked by a focus on city governance and public finance, and he has been an active participant in New York City's political landscape for several decades.
