Sarah Elizabeth McBride is an American politician, author, and LGBTQ rights activist serving as the U.S. representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district since 2025. She is a member of the Democratic Party and previously served in the Delaware Senate representing the state's 1st senate district from 2021 to 2025. McBride is recognized as the nation's highest ranking openly transgender elected official and is the first openly transgender member of the United States Congress. Prior to her election to Congress, she was the national press secretary of the Human Rights Campaign from 2016 to 2021. In 2020, McBride made history as the first openly transgender person elected as a state senator in the United States. She has actively advocated for LGBTQ rights, including lobbying for legislation in Delaware that banned discrimination based on gender identity in employment, housing, insurance, and public accommodations. In 2016, McBride gained national attention by speaking at the Democratic National Convention, becoming the first openly transgender person to address a major party convention in American history. She is also the author of the memoir Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality, published in 2018 with a foreword by then-former vice president Joe Biden. McBride has played a significant role in shaping Biden's perspectives and political stance on transgender issues, and her 2024 congressional campaign was the subject of the 2025 documentary State of Firsts.
