Nancy Ruth Mace, born on December 4, 1977, is an American politician currently serving as the U.S. representative for South Carolina's 1st congressional district. She has held this position since 2021 and is a member of the Republican Party. Prior to her tenure in Congress, Mace served in the South Carolina General Assembly from 2018 to 2020, representing the 99th district, which includes Hanahan, northeast Mount Pleasant, and Daniel Island. In 2018, she was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives after serving in other roles. Mace made history as the first Republican woman elected to Congress from South Carolina. Her political career includes defeating incumbent Democrat Joe Cunningham in the 2020 election and securing re-election in 2022 and 2024. She graduated from the Citadel Military College of South Carolina in 1999 as the first woman to complete the Corps of Cadets program, which was led at the time by her father, Emory Mace, who served as the commandant of cadets. In addition to her congressional duties, Mace was a candidate for governor of South Carolina in 2026, although she was eliminated in the primary election.
