Samuel Benjamin Bankman-Fried, born on March 5, 1992, is an American former entrepreneur who is known for founding the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. FTX was notable for its global reach and more than 130 international affiliates, and Bankman-Fried was once regarded as a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency industry, ranking among the 41st-richest Americans in the Forbes 400 at the peak of his net worth. However, in November 2022, evidence suggesting potential fraud led to a rapid withdrawal of customer assets from FTX, which resulted in the company's bankruptcy. Subsequently, Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas on December 12, 2022, and extradited to the United States. He faced multiple criminal charges including wire fraud, commodities fraud, securities fraud, money laundering, and violations of campaign finance laws. He was convicted on all seven counts, which encompassed fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. As a result, on March 28, 2024, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to forfeit $11 billion.
