late Associate Justice
About Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Joan Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020. She was nominated by President Bill Clinton to replace retiring justice Byron White and was recognized as a moderate consensus-builder. Ginsburg was the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court, after Sandra Day O'Connor. During her tenure, she authored numerous majority opinions in significant cases such as United States v. Virginia, Olmstead v. L.C., Friends of the Earth, Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services, Inc., and City of Sherrill v. Oneida Indian Nation of New York. Later in her career, she was noted for her passionate dissents that reflected a liberal legal perspective. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Ginsburg experienced early personal loss with the passing of her sister and mother. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Cornell University, married Martin Ginsburg, and became a mother before attending law school at Harvard. She transferred to Columbia Law School, graduating joint first in her class. Ginsburg's work in Sweden and her academic career at Rutgers and Columbia positioned her as an advocate for gender equality and women's rights. She was active as a volunteer attorney, member of the American Civil Liberties Union, and served on its board and as general counsel in the 1970s. Elevated to the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter, she was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993. She remained on the Court until her death, despite health challenges and calls for her to retire, passing away from complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer. Her death led to a significant ideological shift on the Court.
