Richard Dale Snyder, born on August 19, 1958, in Battle Creek, Michigan, is an American business executive, venture capitalist, attorney, accountant, and politician. He served as the 48th governor of Michigan from 2011 to 2019 and is a member of the Republican Party. Snyder's career in business began in 1982; he was chairman of the board of Gateway from 2005 to 2007 and co-founded Ardesta LLC, a venture capital firm. He also founded HealthMedia Inc., a digital health coaching company, and is the CEO of SensCy, a cybersecurity company based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Snyder's political career includes winning the 2010 Michigan gubernatorial election and securing reelection in 2014. Due to term limits, he did not seek re-election in 2018 and was succeeded by Gretchen Whitmer. Snyder was considered as a possible Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States in 2012, but the nomination was ultimately awarded to Paul Ryan. During his tenure as governor, Snyder gained national attention in 2014 for his handling of the Flint water crisis, which exposed residents to lead-contaminated water. Reports have concluded that he bore significant legal responsibility for the crisis, and in 2021 he was criminally charged along with others; he pled not guilty to two misdemeanor charges.
