Richard Francis Dennis Barry III, born on March 28, 1944, is an American former professional basketball player recognized for his prolific scoring and versatile playing style. He is the only player to lead the NCAA, ABA, and NBA in points per game in a season. Barry holds the record as the all-time ABA scoring leader in both regular season and postseason play, with averages of 30.5 and 33.5 points per game respectively. His 36.3 points per game in the NBA Finals is the highest in history. Known for his unorthodox underhand free throw technique, Barry achieved a career free throw percentage of .880 in the ABA and a .900 percentage at the time of his retirement in 1980, making him one of the most accurate free throw shooters of his era. His accomplishments have been recognized with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 and inclusion among the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996. In 2021, he was honored as one of the league's greatest players by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. Barry is also known for his family of basketball players, including his sons Brent, Jon, Drew, Scooter, and Canyon Barry. His wife, Lynn Norenberg Barry, was a notable basketball player at the College of William & Mary where she was the first female athlete to have her jersey number retired.
