Jack William Nicklaus, born on January 21, 1940, is an American retired professional golfer and golf course designer. Known as 'the Golden Bear,' he is regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time. During his career, Nicklaus won 117 professional tournaments, including a record 18 major championships. He won the U.S. Amateur twice, in 1959 and 1961, and secured his first professional victory at the 1962 U.S. Open, defeating Arnold Palmer in an 18-hole playoff. Nicklaus was part of 'The Big Three' alongside Palmer and Gary Player, a trio credited with boosting golf's popularity in the 1960s. He became the first player to win the Masters Tournament in consecutive years in 1966 and achieved victories across all major championships, including the PGA Championship and the Open Championship, by the age of 26. Nicklaus was recognized as the AP Athlete of the Decade for the 1970s, with 17 major wins by 1980, surpassing Bobby Jones's record and completing multiple career grand slams. His final major victory was the 1986 Masters Tournament, which marked his sixth victory at that event. After turning professional, he joined the Senior PGA Tour in 1990, winning 10 tournaments and eight senior majors. As of 2026, Nicklaus leads Nicklaus Design, one of the world's largest golf course design companies, and organizes the Memorial Tournament held at his course, Muirfield Village Golf Club. He has authored instructional and autobiographical books, including Golf My Way, and has been honored with numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
