Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor was an American stand-up comedian and actor, recognized for his incisive observations and storytelling style. Born on December 1, 1940, and passing away on December 10, 2005, Pryor is considered one of the greatest and most influential comedians of all time. His work earned him a Primetime Emmy Award and five Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for albums such as That Nigger's Crazy, Is It Something I Said?, Bicentennial Nigger, Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip, and Richard Pryor Here and Now. His body of work encompasses numerous concert films and recordings, and he was also a co-writer for the satirical western comedy film Blazing Saddles. As an actor, Pryor starred mainly in comedies and gained acclaim for his collaborations with Gene Wilder, including Silver Streak, Stir Crazy, See No Evil Hear No Evil, and Another You. He also appeared in a variety of other films such as Uptown Saturday Night, Blue Collar, The Wiz, California Suite, Superman III, Harlem Nights, and Lost Highway. Pryor made appearances on television shows including Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live, and hosted his own shows, The Richard Pryor Show and Pryor's Place. Recognized for his influence on comedy, Pryor was awarded the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 1998 and received the Writers Guild of America Award in 1974.
