Rebecca Peta White, born on 4 February 1983, is an Australian politician and member of the Australian Labor Party. She was elected to the federal House of Representatives representing the Tasmanian seat of Lyons in 2025 and serves as an assistant minister in three portfolios within the second Albanese ministry. Prior to her federal parliament career, White was active in Tasmania’s state politics, serving as leader of the Tasmanian Labor Party from 2017 to 2021 and again from 2021 to 2024. During her tenure, she led the party through three state elections. White was raised in Nugent, Tasmania, and earned arts and commerce degrees from the University of Tasmania. She joined the ALP at a young age and worked as a political adviser before her election to the Tasmanian House of Assembly at the 2010 state election. White was elected unopposed as the Tasmanian Labor Party leader in 2017 and led the party through electoral cycles, including the 2018 election where her leadership contributed to increased votes and seats despite an overall defeat. After the 2021 election, her vote share declined, prompting her resignation as leader; she was succeeded briefly by David O’Byrne, who resigned shortly after due to sexual harassment allegations. White then returned as leader until her resignation following the 2024 state election, which resulted in a hung parliament with Labor not pursuing government formation. She resigned from the Tasmanian House of Assembly in February 2025 to contest the federal seat of Lyons, securing victory at that year’s election. Subsequently, she was appointed as an assistant minister in the Australian government.
