Raymond Kurzweil, born on February 12, 1948, is an American computer scientist, author, entrepreneur, futurist, and inventor. His work spans several technological fields including optical character recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, speech recognition technology, and electronic keyboard instruments. As an author, he has written extensively on health technology, artificial intelligence, transhumanism, the technological singularity, and futurism. Kurzweil is recognized for his optimistic outlook on the potential for life extension through advancements in nanotechnology, robotics, and biotechnology. He is a prominent figure in the transhumanist movement and shares his perspectives through lectures and writings on the future of human and technological evolution. Kurzweil's contributions have been honored with numerous awards, including the 1999 National Medal of Technology and Innovation awarded by President Bill Clinton. He received the Lemelson–MIT Prize in 2001 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in the same year for his application of technology to improve human-machine communication.
