human rights campaigner
About Peter Tatchell
Peter Gary Tatchell, born on 25 January 1952, is an Australian-born British human rights campaigner known for his work with LGBTQ social movements. He was selected as the Labour Party's parliamentary candidate for Bermondsey in 1981 but faced criticism from the party leader, Michael Foot, for ostensibly supporting extra-parliamentary action against the Thatcher government. Despite this controversy, he was allowed to stand in the Bermondsey by-election in February 1983, which resulted in the Labour Party losing the seat to the Liberals. In the 1990s, Tatchell co-founded OutRage!, a direct action group advocating for LGBTQ rights, and actively campaigned on various issues including the Stop Murder Music campaign, which aimed to counter music lyrics believed to incite violence against LGBT people. He has also been involved in efforts such as attempting citizen's arrests of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe in 1999 and 2001. In April 2004, Tatchell joined the Green Party of England and Wales and was selected as a prospective parliamentary candidate in Oxford East in 2007. He stepped down from this role in December 2009 due to brain damage acquired during protests and from a bus accident. Since 2011, he has served as the Director of the Peter Tatchell Foundation. Additionally, he has participated in over 30 debates at the Oxford Union on issues including patriotism, Thatcherism, and university safe spaces.
