Peter Hook, born Peter Woodhead on 13 February 1956, is an English musician known for his work as the bassist and co-founder of the post-punk band Joy Division and its successor, New Order. He distinguished himself by often using the bass as a lead instrument, playing melodies on the high strings and employing a signature heavy chorus effect. Alongside Bernard Sumner, Hook formed Joy Division in 1976, and after the death of lead singer Ian Curtis in 1980, the band reformed as New Order. Hook played bass with New Order until 2007. He has been recognized for his contributions to music, including being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2026 as a member of Joy Division and New Order, following two previous nominations. Throughout his career, Hook has recorded albums with various bands, including Revenge, Monaco, and Freebass, serving in roles such as bassist, keyboardist, and lead vocalist. Currently, he is the lead singer and one of the bassists for Peter Hook & the Light.
