Paul Colm Michael Mescal is an Irish actor born on 2 February 1996 in Dublin and raised in Maynooth. He studied acting at The Lir Academy and performed in plays in Dublin theatres. Mescal gained prominence with his leading role in the BBC and Hulu romantic drama miniseries Normal People in 2020, which earned him the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor and a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Transitioning to film, he made his debut in the psychological drama The Lost Daughter in 2021. His performance as a troubled father in the coming-of-age film Aftersun in 2022 garnered a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Mescal continued to build his film career with roles in the psychological drama All of Us Strangers (2023), the historical action film Gladiator II (2024), and a portrayal of William Shakespeare in Hamnet (2025). His stage work includes playing Stanley Kowalski in a West End revival of A Streetcar Named Desire in 2022, which earned him the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor.
