Patricia Louise Holte, known professionally as Patti LaBelle, was born on May 24, 1944. She is an American R&B singer and actress who has earned the nickname the Godmother of Soul. LaBelle's music career began in the early 1960s as the lead singer and frontwoman of the vocal group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles. The group later changed its name to Labelle in the 1970s, releasing the US number-one hit Lady Marmalade. Following the disbandment of the group in 1977, LaBelle launched a successful solo career. In the 1980s, she achieved mainstream success with singles such as If Only You Knew, New Attitude, and Stir It Up, along with a number-one album titled Winner in You and a number-one single called On My Own, a duet with Michael McDonald. LaBelle’s accolades include two Grammy Awards, one in 1992 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her album Burnin’ and another in 1999 for the live album Live! One Night Only. She has also acted in films like A Soldier’s Story, television series including A Different World and American Horror Story: Freak Show, and her own sitcom Out All Night in 1992. Additionally, she hosted a lifestyle show called Living It Up with Patti LaBelle on TV One. LaBelle’s brand extensions include bedding, cookbooks, and food products such as Patti’s Sweet Potato Pie, which went viral after appearing in a YouTube video in 2015. Over her seven-decade career, LaBelle has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and received inductions into multiple halls of fame, with her recognition as one of the 100 Greatest Singers by Rolling Stone.
