Patrick Jacques Roy is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach, executive, and former player. Most recently, he served as the head coach for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League. Roy is widely regarded as one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history and was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017. During his playing career, which was primarily in the NHL, he played for the Montreal Canadiens for 11 years and the Colorado Avalanche for eight years. He won the Stanley Cup four times, securing two titles with each team. Roy was recognized in 2004 as the greatest goaltender in NHL history by a panel of writers and fans. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006. Roy is the only player in NHL history to win the Conn Smythe Trophy three times, each in a different decade and for two different teams. His jersey number 33 has been retired by both the Canadiens and the Avalanche. Known as Saint Patrick, he was instrumental in popularizing the butterfly style of goaltending, which has become a dominant technique worldwide. After retiring as a player, Roy transitioned into coaching, including roles with the Colorado Avalanche and the Quebec Remparts. His coaching career with the Islanders spanned from January 2024 until April 2026.
