Thomas Hickey: podcast appearances and interviews

Thomas Hickey was an Irish-born soldier who served in the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. He initially fought as a combat field servant to Major-general William Johnson during the French and Indian War. Later, Hickey joined the Continental Army at the outset of the Revolutionary War, becoming part of the Commander-in-Chief's Guard responsible for protecting General George Washington, his staff, and the Continental Army's payroll. During his service, Hickey was briefly jailed for passing counterfeit money. While incarcerated, he claimed to be involved in a conspiracy, which led to his trial and execution for mutiny, sedition, and treachery. His execution marked the first instance of a Continental Army soldier being put to death for these charges. Reports, though unverified, suggest that Hickey may have been involved in an assassination attempt against George Washington in 1776. Following his death, George Washington issued a statement underscoring the gravity of Hickey's crimes and warning other soldiers to avoid similar misconduct. Washington emphasized the importance of moral conduct and cautioned soldiers against temptations that could lead to disloyalty or dishonor.
