Marco Johann Sturm, born on September 8, 1978, is a German professional ice hockey coach and a former player. He is currently the head coach of the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. As a player, Sturm was a forward who competed in the NHL and the Deutsche Eishockey Liga from 1995 to 2013. He began his career with the German club EV Landshut, playing with the team from 1995 to 1997. He was selected 21st overall in the 1996 NHL entry draft by the San Jose Sharks and played his rookie season in 1997-98. After spending eight-and-a-half seasons with the Sharks, Sturm was traded to the Boston Bruins in November 2005 as part of a package deal for Joe Thornton. He remained with Boston until the 2010-11 season, during which he also split time with the Los Angeles Kings and Washington Capitals. In July 2011, Sturm signed with the Vancouver Canucks as an unrestricted free agent but was traded to the Florida Panthers less than a month into the following season. Sturm was a one-time NHL All-Star in 1999 and established himself as a consistent 20-goal scorer, achieving this feat seven times between 2001–02 and 2009–10. He was the most productive German player in the NHL until Leon Draisaitl surpassed him in 2021. Internationally, Sturm represented Germany in four IIHF World Championships, two Winter Olympics, and one World Cup.
