Charles Laughton was an English actor and director born on July 1, 1899, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and began his professional stage career in 1926. Laughton performed in both classical and modern roles on the West End and Off West End, making a notable impact in Shakespeare plays at the Old Vic. His acting career expanded to Broadway and Hollywood, where he portrayed a wide range of characters including monsters, misfits, and kings.

Laughton received numerous accolades throughout his career, including an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the 1933 film The Private Life of Henry VIII. He was also nominated for BAFTA awards and a Golden Globe, and he earned a Grammy Award. His filmography includes significant titles such as The Barretts of Wimpole Street, Ruggles of Red Gap, Rembrandt, Jamaica Inn, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Big Clock, Young Bess, Hobson's Choice, and Spartacus. His final film role was in Advise & Consent in 1962. Laughton was recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

In addition to his acting, Laughton directed the acclaimed film The Night of the Hunter in 1955. Later in his career, he also directed stage productions including The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial and Don Juan in Hell, the latter of which he also starred in.
