Michelle Smith de Bruin, born on December 16, 1969, is an Irish lawyer and retired Olympic swimmer. She is notable for winning three gold medals at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, in the 400 m individual medley, 400 m freestyle, and 200 m individual medley, as well as securing a bronze medal in the 200 m butterfly event. Smith achieved prominence at the 1995 European Championships, which was followed by her Olympic successes; her athletic career was marked by controversy, including allegations of doping that were never proved. She was subsequently banned for four years by FINA, the international swimming federation, for manipulating an anti-doping sample through deliberate contamination with alcohol. This ban was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport following her appeal. Despite the ban and her advanced age for competitive swimming, Smith never returned to the sport. After her athletic career, she worked as a barrister, practicing under her married name, Michelle Smith de Bruin. Although the doping allegations led to a suspension, authorities were unable to demonstrate that her performances resulted from the use of performance-enhancing substances; as a result, her competitive achievements remain officially unaltered, and she is recognized as Ireland's most successful Olympian.
