Michael Corbett Shannon, born August 7, 1974, is an American actor known for his forceful and intense acting style. He has received multiple award nominations throughout his career, including two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in Revolutionary Road in 2008 and Nocturnal Animals in 2016. Additionally, he garnered Actor Award and Golden Globe nominations for his performance in 99 Homes in 2014. Shannon's film debut was in Groundhog Day in 1993, and he has appeared in numerous films such as Jesus' Son, Pearl Harbor, Kangaroo Jack, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, The Iceman, The Night Before, The Shape of Water, Knives Out, and Bullet Train. He is a frequent collaborator with director Jeff Nichols, having appeared in all of Nichols' films to date, including Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, Loving, and The Bikeriders. Shannon also played General Zod in the DC Extended Universe films Man of Steel and The Flash. His stage work includes a Broadway debut in the play Grace in 2012 and a Tony Award-nominated performance as James Tyrone Jr. in the revival of Long Day's Journey into Night in 2016. On television, he portrayed Nelson Van Alden in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire from 2010 to 2014, winning two Actor Awards. He starred in Hulu's Nine Perfect Strangers and Showtime's George & Tammy, receiving a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for the latter. Shannon also played James A. Garfield in the Netflix miniseries Death by Lightning and Robert H. Jackson in the film Nuremberg.
