Mariel Margaret Mia Hamm, born on March 17, 1972, is a retired American professional soccer player who represented the United States national team from 1987 to 2004. She played as a forward and midfielder and participated in four editions of the FIFA Women's World Cup, securing titles in 1991 and 1999. Hamm also achieved Olympic success by winning gold medals in 1996 and 2004 and a silver medal in 2000. She was a founding player of the Women's United Soccer Association, the first professional women’s soccer league in the United States, where she played for the Washington Freedom from 2001 to 2003. During her college career at the University of North Carolina, she contributed to four NCAA Division I Championship titles. Recognized as a soccer icon, Hamm is regarded as one of the most influential female players of all time. As of March 2026, she ranks third in international goals scored by players of any gender, fourth in appearances for the U.S. national team with 276 matches, and first in international assists with 144. She earned numerous accolades including twice being named FIFA World Player of the Year and five consecutive U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year awards. Hamm received six ESPY awards and was named Sportswoman of the Year twice by the Women’s Sports Foundation. Her honors include induction into multiple halls of fame, including the National Soccer Hall of Fame and the World Football Hall of Fame. She is a co-owner of professional soccer clubs Los Angeles FC and Angel City FC, a global ambassador for FC Barcelona, and served on the board of A.S. Roma from 2014 to 2020. Hamm is also an author and has appeared in films and television about women's soccer.
