Melania Knauss Trump, born Melanija Knavs on April 26, 1970, is a Slovenian and American former model and the first lady of the United States. She served in this role initially from 2017 to 2021 as the third wife of Donald Trump, the 45th and 47th president of the United States, and resumed the position in 2025. As the first naturalized citizen and the first non-native English speaker to become first lady, she was also the second foreign-born occupant of the role and the second Roman Catholic to do so. Born in Yugoslavia, Melania began her modeling career at age 16 while pursuing her education. She changed the spelling of her name to Melania Knauss and worked internationally, including in Paris and Milan, before immigrating to the United States in 1996. She met Donald Trump in 1998 and supported his career and presidential campaigns, marrying him in 2005 and having a son, Barron, in 2006. In 2009, she launched her own jewelry brand, Melania. During her time as first lady, she concentrated on children's issues through her Be Best campaign and made numerous hospital visits. She also played a role in advising her husband on policy decisions and publicly supported his claims following the 2020 election.
