Maxime Bernier is a Canadian politician and the founder and leader of the People's Party of Canada. He was previously a member of the Conservative Party and served as a Member of Parliament for Beauce from 2006 to 2019. Bernier held various positions in the Harper government, including industry minister from 2006 to 2007 and foreign affairs minister until 2008. He was appointed Minister of State for small business and tourism in 2011. Bernier ran for the Conservative Party leadership in 2017, advancing to the final round with a platform emphasizing libertarian principles such as ending corporate welfare, eliminating the capital gains tax, and abolishing supply management in agriculture. He finished second in the leadership race. In 2018, Bernier left the Conservative Party to establish the People's Party of Canada citing disagreements with the party's leadership. He lost his parliamentary seat in the 2019 federal election and has since run unsuccessfully in multiple ridings, including Beauce in 2021 and 2025. His political positions include opposition to mass immigration, a proposal to repeal the Multiculturalism Act, support for more restrictions on abortion, and denial of the scientific consensus on climate change. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bernier opposed mandatory vaccinations and public health measures, participated in anti-lockdown protests, and was arrested for violating public health orders at a gathering in Manitoba.
