Matthew Cox, born July 2, 1969, is an American author and former mortgage broker known for his work in true crime literature. After a career marked by extensive mortgage fraud, Cox was involved in falsifying documents to obtain mortgages significantly exceeding the properties' actual value, resulting in estimated losses between 15 and 55 million US dollars. His criminal activities began in central Florida, where he initially received probation in 2002 for mortgage fraud. Following this, he sold his mortgage company and continued his fraudulent schemes across the southern and southwestern United States, eventually including accomplices. Cox's actions led to his placement on the United States Secret Service's Most Wanted list. He was arrested in November 2006, indicted on 42 counts, and ultimately sentenced to 26 years in prison after plea negotiations. Cox was released from incarceration in July 2019. Since his release, he has established himself as a full-time true crime author, podcaster, and keynote speaker residing in central Florida.
