Matthew Abram Groening, born on February 15, 1954, in Portland, Oregon, is an American cartoonist and animator renowned for creating several influential television series. His notable works include The Simpsons, which began in 1989 and remains the longest-running American primetime television series as well as the longest-running American animated series and sitcom. He also created Futurama, which first aired in 1999 and has experienced multiple runs on different networks, and Disenchantment, a series developed for Netflix that premiered in 2018. Additionally, Groening created the comic strip Life in Hell, which was syndicated from 1977 until 2012. His first professional cartoon sale was to Wet magazine in 1978. The success of Life in Hell led to the creation of animated shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show, which eventually evolved into The Simpsons, a series that Groening developed to retain ownership of his characters. Groening's work has earned him numerous awards, including 14 Primetime Emmy Awards;12 for The Simpsons and 2 for Futurama;as well as a British Comedy Award and the National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award.
